The Calhoun County Board of Commissioners on April 14 approved the 2026 Equalization Report, which shows a 7.7% increase in total assessed and equalized property values and a 5.6% rise in taxable value, county officials said.
Tom Scott, deputy equalization director, presented the report and told the board the increase reflects notable personal property growth tied to industrial investment, including specific upticks in Bedford and Clarence townships associated with utility and infrastructure improvements. The board approved the report and accompanying resolution (Res.049-2026) on a 6–0 roll-call vote with one member absent or excused.
The approval came during the board's regular equalization session, which also included two proclamations: recognition of April 12–18 as 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Week and designation of National County Government Month 2026. Both proclamations were adopted by voice vote.
In other business the board approved its consent agenda (Res.050-2026), which included an amendment to Appendix A of the county ORV ordinance; appointment of Jerry Johnson to the Calhoun County Board of Public Health; reappointments to the Senior Services Senior Millage Allocation Committee; ratification of FY2027 state and federal funding requests; certification of 2025 Act 51 annual road mileage for CCRD; and 2026 parks millage allocations. These routine items passed on a voice vote.
Commissioner Gary Tompkins reported the Senior Millage Allocation Committee is revising the senior mini-grant application process to make it clearer ahead of the 2027 funding cycle. Commissioner Monique French congratulated Chris Lussier on his appointment as director of the Battle Creek Housing Commission, effective June 1.
Assistant County Administrator—Community Services Doug Ferrall said the county's Opioid Settlement Funds Impact Report was featured in an International City/County Management Association newsletter and that the Road Department will mail notices to residents about upcoming work; he said contractor patching is scheduled to begin Monday, April 20 and the county will issue a press release.
The board approved the claims payable listing for March 12 through April 7, 2026 in the amount of $18,713,968.99 (Res.051-2026) on a 6–0 roll-call vote with one member absent/excused. Chair Derek King adjourned the meeting at 7:23 p.m.
