The Livingston County Board presented a distinguished service award to Sergeant Caleb Cutting and his K9 partner Kai, praising an eight-year partnership that includes narcotics, tracking and cadaver-detection certifications; Kai is slated to retire early this summer.
The Livingston County Board of Supervisors recognized Sergeant Caleb Cutting and his K9 partner, Kai, with a distinguished service award during the board’s regular meeting.
Presenter (county representative) described Cutting’s career with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, noting he began in 2010 and rose to sergeant in 2020 while serving in specialized units including SWAT and forensic investigations. The presenter said Cutting was paired with Kai in 2018 and together they earned dual-purpose narcotics and handler certifications in 2019 and later a cadaver-detection certification, making them “the first and only triple purpose K9 team in the history of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.”
The presenter summarized Kai’s record of service, saying the dog has been “instrumental in numerous apprehensions, human tracking operations, and drug detection” and describing a recent multi-county pursuit that ended with Kai apprehending a suspect. The presenter added, “This exceptional team has exemplified courage, courage, commitment, and service at the highest level.”
The presenter and the chair announced that Kai will retire early this summer and will live with Sergeant Cutting and his family in retirement. The board applauded the team’s service.
No board action or policy decision accompanied the recognition; the item was a ceremonial presentation inserted into the regular agenda.
