Resident urges preservation of large trees in Mill Creek Park ahead of sewer work

Summary
Susie Beiersdorfer told council she and other residents want large trees in Mill Creek Park spared where possible during a sewer project and cited a separate FirstEnergy transmission proposal that once faced public opposition at PUCO.
Susie Beiersdorfer addressed Youngstown City Council to urge preservation of large trees in Mill Creek Park that may be affected by a forthcoming sewer project. She described marked trees near Fellows Gardens and a large sycamore near Lake Glacier that she said should not be removed solely to make space for equipment.
Beiersdorfer said she reviewed project plans at the Michael Kusalaba library and was surprised by tree-marking she did not expect. She called for thoughtfulness about trees’ roles in carbon capture, erosion control, shade and habitat, and asked council and project managers to save large specimen trees where possible. "Please, if there's any way we can save a few big and beautiful trees from removal, I and we would be so grateful," she said.
Beiersdorfer also referenced a separate utility issue: public opposition to a FirstEnergy transmission-line proposal near the amphitheater led, she said, to a May 2022 rejection by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), and she said a Dec. 22 public meeting in Columbus is scheduled on related transmission plans.
Council took no immediate action on the Mill Creek Park request during the meeting; Beiersdorfer asked the public and council to weigh tree preservation in the sewer project's planning and any necessary mitigation.
